Gateway Arch visitors disappointed over govt. shutdown
ST. LOUIS - Travelers from various parts of the country stood outside the Gateway Arch on Wednesday and expressed disappointment over its closure.
“I’m not happy with politicians today,” said Minnesota resident Gary Weeks.
Visitors can still walk on the Gateway Arch grounds, but the national monument’s doors are locked because of the federal government shutdown.
“I’m disappointed. We thought part of it was going to be open,” said Virginia resident Sally Kizer.
The Gateway Arch website indicates refunds for pre-purchased tickets will take place.
“My father brought me here when I was a little kid, and I remember going up to the top so I thought it would be cool to come back 30-plus years with my son,” said Kyle Sims, an Ohio resident visiting St. Louis. “Here we are, and it’s shut down.”
Bridget Granke, a Michigan parent, traveled to St. Louis so her daughter could ride to the top of the Gateway Arch before officially joining the military. She said the budget disagreement is only hurting the people served by the government.
The Old Courthouse will also remain closed during the shutdown. The museum is part of the Gateway Arch National Park.
The shutdown is also leading to furloughs.
Arch visitors urged lawmakers to end the shutdown.
“I don’t understand why they’re doing this to the average public,” Weeks said.
