ST. LOUIS - Gateway Arch National Park—known for being a noteworthy attraction in St. Louis—is being recognized as a top national museum.

In a press release on Tuesday, Gateway Arch National Park announced that it received accreditation from the prestigious American Alliance of Museums (AAM).

Museums go through a lengthy reaccreditation every 10 years, and to qualify, they must complete a self-study as well as undergo a site visit with peer reviewers.

Accreditation is also competitive—as about 33,000 museums exist in the U.S., but only 1,110 are chosen.

"Being reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums is a prestigious honor that
validates the dedication, expertise, and collaborative efforts of everyone involved with
Gateway Arch National Park,” said David Murray, superintendent of Gateway Arch
National Park.

AAM's review of Gateway Arch National Park commended the museum's efforts through its renovations, citing the $380 million CityArchRiver Project.

The Gateway Arch Park Foundation said that the project helped preserve historic resources, strengthen partnerships and attract tourists.

“Gateway Arch Park Foundation extends its sincere congratulations to Gateway Arch
National Park on this monumental recognition,” said Ryan McClure, executive director
of Gateway Arch Park Foundation. “This re-accreditation reflects the National Park
Service’s steadfast commitment to excellence in preservation, education, and public
engagement."
