SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Drivers who rely on State Route 78 (SR-78) near Mar Vista Drive should prepare for full closures during certain time periods beginning next week, as Caltrans contractors begin a series of demolition operations.

From Monday, Aug. 11 through Thursday, Aug. 14, all lanes of specific SR-78 sections will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. as crews carry out demolition work on parts of the Mar Vista Bridge. The project is part of ongoing improvement and expansion efforts in the area, according to Caltrans.

Mar Vista Drive detours

The following additional detours will be in place for those using Mar Vista Drive:

  • Eastbound drivers: Turn right on Thibodo Road, then left on Sycamore Avenue. Use the westbound SR-78 onramp and exit at Mar Vista Drive.
  • Westbound drivers: Continue east on Mar Vista Drive, turn right on S Santa Fe Avenue, then right on Robelin Drive. Proceed to Sycamore Avenue, turn right on Thibodo Road, and turn left onto Mar Vista Drive.

What to expect

The work will be performed overnight to minimize disruption during peak travel hours. However, residents and businesses nearby should anticipate increased traffic on detour routes, as well as construction noise, lighting, and OSHA-required vehicle back-up alarms. Caltrans says crews will work to limit disturbances as much as possible.
