From overlooked to NFL prospect: Moline’s Matthew Bailey ready to make the leap

MOLINE, Ill. — Once under-recruited and overlooked, former Moline High School standout Matthew Bailey now finds himself on the doorstep of the NFL – with his college head coach leading the charge of believers.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema didn’t sugarcoat it when reflecting on Bailey’s journey.

“We were the only ones who offered,” Bielema said. “There’s probably 100 schools now who wish they had. He’s an elite football player and an elite person… if he plays the way he’s capable this season, he’ll probably have a decision to make.”

That decision? Whether or not to leave Champaign early and declare for the NFL Draft.

It’s hard to imagine now, but Bailey — who played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back for Moline — didn’t initially receive a scholarship offer on his recruiting visit to Illinois. He left heartbroken, uncertain whether his dream of playing Big Ten football would come true. But Bielema called him later that night, reminding him to stay patient.

Two days before signing day, Illinois offered. Now, the safety has developed into one of the most promising defensive prospects in the conference.

“We’ve had conversations about it going into the season,” Bailey said of the NFL talk. “There’s an opportunity — but I have to take advantage of it. It definitely puts a chip on your shoulder when people doubt you. It’s motivation to keep pushing, one more day at a time.”

His roots remain planted firmly in the Quad Cities. Bailey regularly returns to his alma mater, Moline High School, where head coach Mike Morrissey says Bailey’s success is no surprise.

“He’s always been mature, motivated and a true student of the game,” Morrissey said. “If he reaches that next level, it will be an incredible moment for him, his family, and this community. Everyone here would bet on Matthew Bailey.”

From lightly recruited local prospect to one of Illinois’ most important defenders — Bailey now heads into the fall with a chance to become the next Quad Citian playing on Sundays.
