FEMA in-person assistance ends Thursday for May 16 tornado victims

ST. LOUIS - Thursday marks the final day for in-person FEMA assistance for residents affected by the May 16 tornado in north St. Louis.

The Urban League Entrepreneurship and Women's Business Center, located at 4401 Natural Bridge Avenue, and Union Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, located at 626 North Newstead Avenue, are the last two disaster recovery centers open to provide help to tornado victims.

Since opening, the centers have seen more than 10,000 visits from those seeking help. These centers have been crucial for residents seeking assistance with home repairs, temporary housing, and replacing essential property destroyed by the tornado.

FEMA has already provided $47 million in individual assistance to 9,000 households, while the Small Business Administration has approved $24.4 million in low-interest disaster loans.

Starting Friday, the Urban League center will transition to a Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Outreach Center.

Residents are encouraged to visit the centers Thursday to access available resources before the transition. Both centers will be open between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.
