FEMA denies STL's request to extend tornado aid deadline

ST. LOUIS - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has denied the city of St. Louis’ request for extending its individual assistance deadline for those impacted by the May 16 tornado.

The Office of Mayor Cara Spencer announced FEMA’s decision Tuesday evening, expressing disagreement with the agency.

“I strongly disagree with this denial, as we have seen hundreds of St. Louisans continue to apply for FEMA individual assistance each week,” Mayor Cara Spencer said.

FEMA’s individual assistance application deadline remains on Aug. 26 before midnight. Spencer urges those who have not applied for their FEMA application to get registered as soon as possible.

“Even if you don’t get all the details today, the important thing is that your application gets registered with FEMA before the deadline. The hard-working FEMA staff will remain on the ground for weeks and will keep working with you,” Spencer said in the news release.

If an individual’s home or personal property was damaged and not covered by insurance, FEMA may be able to provide assistance for home repairs, temporary housing or essential personal property that was destroyed.

Disaster Recovery Centers have closed at 7 p.m., but St. Louisans can still apply for Individual Assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA at 1-800-621-3362.
