Fans share mixed reactions as Padres say goodbye to City Connect uniforms

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Padres still have a chance for a homestand against the Cubs in the postseason after Friday night's win, but the polarizing City Connect uniform is being retired.

After four seasons, the players wore their pink, mint and yellow alternates one final time.

“We’re used to the Padres colors even the blue from before and then we get back to brown and gold and then they throw these colors, so it was almost like a shock," said one fan who goes by the pseudonym Padre Libre.

The club launched the vibrant alternate uniforms in 2022 to represent the binational spirit of the San Diego-Tijuana region.

But to some – they give off something else.

“More like Miami Vice vibes,” said Padres fan Harrison McCarver.

There’s no one way to show Padres pride but fans have strong opinions.

“Me personally, I just don’t really like how neon colors go with my outfit,” said Jeovani Aragon, another local baseball fan.

The debate dominates social circles.

“I got a lot of friends they either love it or hate it," said Padres fan Toby Rice. "Personally for me it's really special to me because throughout my whole life I’ve been big on vibrant colors.”

Fan Richelle Farley added, “These to me are more feminine colors so to see all the men wearing them is kind of cool.”

While one friend may back the bold look – the other not so much. For instance, Michelle Monahan said she's more traditional.

Saying goodbye to the old means fresh possibilities.

“I’m excited to see what they come out with, preferably orange and blue throwback to the 90s," said Aragon.

A source with the team says fans may get a teaser of what the new City Connect uniforms will look like before the New Year, with an official unveiling expected next spring.
