Families visit Ted Drewes before custard shop closes for season

ST. LOUIS – Ted Drewes Frozen Custard was a popular stop Sunday as the location closed shop for the season, but a few customers made sure to make one last trip on their final day of summer with a treat to beat the heat.

“We saw on social media that this is their last day here today, but it was nice to be able to come over here on a hot day, have the last special day of summer,” said Abby Allred, who brought her family for one last sweet treat.

While the Ted Drewes location on South Grand will close for the season, the Chippewa Avenue location remains open year-round.

Others had the same idea, coming from the Cardinals and Yankees baseball game.

“I wasn't really thinking of that when we planned our day, but it kind of turned into a cardinal game and Ted Drewes, of course, one last day before summer ends,” teacher and mom Jaime Dedmond said. “Kind of back in the grind and regular schedules are kicking in all over again.”

The Breen family came all the way from Atlanta for sports and sightseeing. Lauren Breen said the trip was the last thing on their summer bucket list.

“We try to head up different baseball stadiums one each year and we want to check out a different city and come to see the Cardinals play the Yankees and see everything guys have to do here,” Breen said. “We did the Arch, and we did the riverboat cruise and city museum and the zoo, so I'm trying to get it all in all weekend.”
