Extreme heat and big waves expected in San Diego this Labor Day

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Visitors from across California can expect to see high temperatures 2 to 5 degrees above average during Labor Day weekend.

Labor Day brings gorgeous weather for a day by the pool or a hangout at the beach with the high hitting 84 degrees in San Diego.

Extreme heat sticks around through Tuesday as the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the San Diego mountains and deserts, beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday until 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The moderate heat risk will expand to cover cities like Ramona, El Cajon and Escondido by Tuesday as highs climb to the upper 90s, ranging between 6 to 12 degrees above average across the county.

For people planning to head to the beach to beat the heat, high temperatures will reach the 80s, but a beach hazard statement remains in effect from Saturday until Monday evening.

A southerly swell ushers in big 3 to 6-foot waves with some sets up to 7-feet.

Plus, strong rip currents can be expected, so swim with caution always near a lifeguard.

Temperatures will begin to cool through the middle of the week, but monsoonal moisture returns with rain chances in the mountains.

Places like Mt. Laguna and Julian could see thunderstorms with heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds to end the week.
