Evacuation orders lifted for brush fire in Spring Valley
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A fast-spreading brush fire in Spring Valley prompted temporary evacuation orders on Friday afternoon.
Cal Fire firefighters were battling a brush fire that broke out near Jamacha Blvd. and Double Tree Road in Spring Valley around 2 p.m. Friday, which was burning at a critical rate of spread, the agency reported.
As of 2:30 p.m., the brush fire -- named the Lodge Fire -- had grown to 20 acres, and an evacuation order was issued for the neighborhood surrounding Doubletree Road and Barbit Road in Spring Valley.
Just 10 minutes later, Cal Fire said the fire had grown to 30 acres with the potential to grow to 200 to 300 acres.
However, firefighters were able to stop the forward progress by 3:40 p.m., and the fire was 5% contained, Cal Fire said in an update.
As of 3:58 p.m., the County of San Diego's emergency map showed the evacuation orders had been lifted.
The San Diego Sheriff's Department and San Miguel Fire Department, along with air tankers, are assisting Cal Fire firefighters with the blaze that was being blown by onshore winds.
SkyFOX/KUSI in the Sky was overhead the brush fire as it was burning across hills in an area with heavy brush, close to a neighborhood. Several firefighting helicopters could be seen dropping water as firefighters worked to contain the fire.
A temporary evacuation point was set up at Skyline Church at 11330 Campo Road in La Mesa.
Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area due to active firefighting activity.
