The Kremlin has once again declared its supposed readiness for peace negotiations, but only on the condition that its war goals are fully achieved. Russia continues to justify its invasion with fabricated “primary causes” and maintains active contacts with US representatives, 24 Channel reports.

This means, Russia’s position remains unchanged: any talks are only possible after applying pressure on Ukraine and attempting to impose the aggressor’s terms. Moscow’s objective remains the destruction of Ukraine as an independent country. Otherwise, Russian forces could have withdrawn at any time.

Moscow may claim to seek peace, but any agreements are conditional on achieving all tasks of the so-called “special operation,” Peskov claimed.

Negotiations under the Russian scenario

Peskov also referenced the “root causes” of Russia’s attack on Ukraine and emphasized that the Kremlin still intends to “resolve” them.

“This is very important for us, because Russia remains open to peace negotiations. But through these negotiations, we must achieve our goals and eliminate the initial causes of the military operation,” Peskov said.

His statements came before a meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
