Driver detained in road rage shooting in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) is investigating a road rage shooting that left one man injured Monday evening.

According to an SLMPD spokesperson, District 2 officers were alerted to reports of gunfire in the area of Hampton and Gravois around 7 p.m. 

Witnesses told officials that there was a verbal altercation involving two drivers, which then led to gunfire.

Officials say the victim—identified as a 47-year-old man—called 911, saying that he was shot in the wrist during the heated incident. 

SLMPD said the victim is in stable condition, and the alleged suspect, 58-year-old James Gray, has been detained on the following charges:

  • First-degree assault
  • 2x Armed Criminal Action
  • Discharging/Shooting Firearm at or from motor vehicle/shoot at person, another motor vehicle, or building/habitable structure- persistent offender

The probable cause statement, in relation to the road rage shooting, reads in part: 

“The defendant was driving on Hampton Ave. and became angered at  the confidential victim, who had passed the defendant while operating his vehicle in the same direction on Hampton. 

The victim turned left on Jamieson and the defendant followed and fired a handgun from his vehicle and into the confidential victim's vehicle. The confidential victim was injured by a bullet that had been fired by the defendant.The confidential victim was struck by a bullet while seated in his vehicle.”

In addition to Gray being detained, a gun has been seized, SLMPD says. The 58-year-old remains in custody under no bond.
