Downtown San Diego hosts open-air pickleball tournament

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Fifth Avenue in Downtown San Diego will transform into a pickleball playground this Thursday for the first-ever Gaslamp Urban Pickleball tournament.

The open-air weekly series, showcasing the city's first urban pickleball courts, will be served up every Thursday, from Aug. 21 through Sept. 25, starting at 4 p.m. and rallying till sunset.

The makeshift courts will set up shop on Fifth Avenue, between Market and Island Street, with eight total courts in action and a live DJ to accompany the competition. For the inaugural event, DJ Steez from Temecula will be at the turntables.

All ages and skill levels are welcome, and tickets are available for $25. You can purchase them in advance or on the day of the event. Registered players will also receive exclusive drink specials at participating bars and restaurants.

The fun continues as the event will also include the Wheel of Serves, a pickleball-themed prize wheel in which people can spin to win swag, including Gaslamp gift cards, pickleball gear and a mystery prize that changes weekly.

All you need to bring to the courts are your paddle (limited rentals available), athletic shoes, a water bottle (refill stations on site), and, without saying, good vibes only!

The open-play series will be played in a ladder-style format.

There are several convient parking options, but its advised to arrive early to ensure you find a parking space.

Spots are limited, so secure your court soon!
