Does Illinois owe you money? State Treasurer hosts ICASH event in Bethalto
BETHALTO, Ill. – The Illinois State Treasurer holds approximately $2.5 billion in unclaimed funds and property belonging to Illinoisians. The treasurer’s office and State Rep. Amy Elik, R-Alton, are hosting a public event Monday to give residents a chance to see if the state owes them money.
The state treasurer acts as the custodian of all unclaimed property, which includes overlooked bank accounts, insurance policy proceeds, unpaid rebate cards, and the contents of safe deposit boxes. Those items or property is turned over to the state’s ICASH program.
After five years of failed attempts to locate the owner, items and property are surrendered to the treasurer’s office.
State law requires the treasurer to safeguard unclaimed property—bank accounts, unpaid life insurance benefits, and uncashed rebate checks—until it can be returned to its rightful owners, no matter how long it takes.
“We have heard from people who had no idea that there was unclaimed property waiting for them to claim it,” Elik said. “Who knows, you may have a chunk of property in the state’s possession just waiting for you to access it. Come find out!”
Monday’s in-person ICASH event is being held at the Bethalto Library, located at 321 South Prairie Street, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. If you can’t make it there in person, you can check online at icash.illinoistreasurer.gov.
