Deadline approaching for San Diego's new trash service enrollment

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The City of San Diego is reminding property owners that the deadline to enroll in the city’s updated trash and recycling service is fast approaching.

Residents eligible for city-provided trash collection must create an account and select their desired bin sizes by Sept. 30, or they will automatically receive the default containers.

The change comes as part of the rollout of the voter-approved Measure B and the city’s new Solid Waste Management Fee, which was implemented earlier this year.

City officials say the fee system ensures more equity, as previously only apartment dwellers and residents on private streets paid for trash pickup. Now, everyone receiving service will share the cost — freeing up funds for other public services.

Only property owners eligible for city trash and recycling service need to create an account. The city mailed notifications with step-by-step instructions and unique property codes in July — and a second round of mailers is going out this week for those who may have misplaced the original.

To check eligibility and set up an account, residents should visit sandiego.gov/trash and use the code from their mailer. Those without a code can contact the Environmental Services Department via email at trash@sandiego.gov for help.

Trash service fees will vary based on the size of the bin selected. Residents can use the Trash Service Fee Calculator to estimate costs.

If no selection is made by Sept. 30, residents will automatically receive the default 95-gallon trash and recycling bins.
