Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary in Ste. Genevieve to close this fall
STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. - Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, will permanently close this fall after more than two decades of caring for big cats.
The sanctuary announced the upcoming closure in a Facebook post Monday and also published a notice on its website.
Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary is one of only four wildlife or animal sanctuaries in Missouri verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and its the only such one in the state dedicated solely to tigers.
Since 2004, the sanctuary has educated the public on tigers and provided lifelong care for abused, neglected, and unwanted big cats.
“We are incredibly proud of the impact we’ve made and the lives we’ve touched – both feline and human,” said John Madigan, Operations Manager at Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary in a statement. “This place has been more than a sanctuary – it’s been a home, a mission, and a community. While it’s incredibly hard to say goodbye, we know our animals will be in good hands, and we take comfort in the legacy we’ve built together.”
As part of the sanctuary’s closure plan, two of Crown Ridge's beloved tigers, Sebastian and Shakira, will be permanently relocated to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, another accredited animal sanctuary.
“Turpentine Creek has long admired the work of Crown Ridge, and we are honored to provide a forever home for Sebastian and Shakira,” said Tanya Smith, President of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. “We know how much these animals are loved, and we are committed to continuing that standard of care – ensuring they thrive in a safe, enriching environment.”
Another tiger, Thor, will remain at Crown Ridge due to her advanced age. She will live out her life in familiar surroundings, cared for by keepers she knows and trusts.
The sanctuary's final public tour will take place on Sunday, September 28. Lodging accommodations will remain available through October, giving supporters one last opportunity to visit the sanctuary grounds.
“I am truly grateful for our talented caregivers and the team at Turpentine Creek for carrying out the Mission of our Foundation, providing exceptional care and promoting the preservation and protection of these amazing animals. While the Tigers hold a special place in my heart, it brings me great joy knowing they will be cared for by the incredible team at Turpentine Creek. Sebastian and Shakira are in great hands.” said Loretta Scott, President of The Scott Foundation, connected with the sanctuary.
