Correctional veteran to oversee City Justice Center
ST. LOUIS - The city of St. Louis will be having a new Commissioner of Corrections next month, according to the Office of Mayor Cara Spencer.
Mayor Cara Spencer announced Thursday afternoon that she appointed Nate Hayward to the position, which was vacant since Aug. 15.
"Making the (St. Louis City Justice Center) a place where detainees are safe and can begin working toward a better future as contributing members of society is a top priority for me, and I know Nate Hayward shares that commitment,” Spencer said.
Hayward has a lengthy track record when it comes to his correctional experience, spanning 32 years. The city says Hayward worked as a correctional officer and then began overseeing the daily operations of the St. Louis City Justice Center.
He was also tasked with being in charge of the safety and health of inmates.
“This opportunity marks a new chapter, and I am committed to leading with integrity, transparency and a deep respect for both staff and residents,” Hayward said. “I understand the importance of this role and the challenges that come with it, and I am ready to work collaboratively to enhance safety, accountability and rehabilitative efforts within the Justice Center.”
Nate Hayward will assume his position on Sept. 16, according to the city of St. Louis.
