Cooling trend and bigger surf on tap for the rest of the week
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Heat alerts are expiring for the mountains and deserts after an extended heat wave brough elevated heat risk and above average temperatures the last few days.
A cooling trend will take over into the weekend as a troughing pattern takes shape over much of the West Coast. This will bring temps closer to the low 70s for the coast, mid-80s for valleys and mountains and low 100s for the desert communities.

Gusty northwest winds will pick up each afternoon from 25 to 45 miles per hour each afternoon and evening through Wednesday in the deserts. Despite the slight dip in temperatures, the dry conditions, warm weather and winds will create elevated fire danger for inland areas.
At the coast, a south swell is generating some energy in the water and producing three to five foot waves with some sets of up to 6 foot at our beaches. Watch out for strong rip currents through Friday.
Our marine layer looks to return each evening and early morning along the coast with some patchy fog occurring in the coastal mesas and western valleys.
