Cool Zones open across San Diego County as triple-digit heat expected

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- With scorching temperatures gripping San Diego County, officials are urging residents to seek relief at designated Cool Zones as part of a seasonal program aimed at protecting the public during extreme heat.

A Heat Warning remains in effect for San Diego County deserts through 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, with temperatures expected to soar up to 118 degrees. Additionally, a Heat Advisory has been issued for both the county’s valleys and mountain regions, where temperatures could reach 90 to 102 degree, respectively.

In response, Cool Zones — free, air-conditioned public spaces — are now open throughout the region. The program, which runs annually from June 1 to Oct. 31, offers safe havens for vulnerable residents, especially seniors, children and those without access to air conditioning.

Where to find a Cool Zone

Residents can download a printable list of active Cool Zone sites or use the interactive map to filter by city, ZIP code, or pet policy. Many sites include libraries, community centers, and senior centers.

While most Cool Zone sites are for people only, officials note that some local pet stores are welcoming both pets and their owners into their air-conditioned stores during this heatwave. It’s advised to call ahead and confirm policies before heading out.

Heat safety tips

As temperatures soar across the region, residents are reminded to:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible, especially during peak afternoon heat.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Never leave children or animals in parked cars, even for a short time.
  • Keep pets indoors and provide plenty of water.
