Coast Guard detains 13 migrants on boat off San Diego coast

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Over a dozen migrants were detained after the Coast Guard intercepted a boat several miles off the coast of San Diego early Thursday.

The Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour (WPC-1129) crew intercepted a 25-foot cuddy cabin boat with 13 people on board about 23 miles off the coast of Point Loma in San Diego around 5:45 a.m. Thursday, the Coast Guard announced Saturday.

A boarding team found 10 adults and three minors who were accompanied by their mother on board the boat. According to the Coast Guard, one person claimed Guatemalan nationality, and the other 12 claimed Mexican nationality.

All 13 people on board were detained by the Coast Guard and the boat was seized.

In a social media post, the Coast Guard said, "Securing 31,000 miles of maritime borders takes constant vigilance and teamwork."
