City Heights storefronts, streets to get a makeover this weekend

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- This weekend, a stretch of University Avenue in City Heights will receive a long-awaited makeover as residents, volunteers, and local business owners join forces to refresh the block and clean up public spaces.

The event, called "Beautify the Block," is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park on Wightman Street. It's being organized by the City Heights Community Development Corporation (CDC).

Organizers say the goal is to breathe new life into the business corridor, which has faced years of disruption due to prolonged construction delays and street closures that have significantly impacted small businesses. Explaining the efforts further, officials say this is about more than just paint and plants — it's a statement of pride and resilience for the community.

Residents and supporters are encouraged to attend and lend a hand. Volunteers who show up for "Beauty the Block" will:

  • Paint storefronts and utility boxes with vibrant, culturally inspired art
  • Upgrade planters and trash cans
  • Remove litter and debris from sidewalks and gutters
  • Improve the overall look and feel of the City Heights neighborhoods
