Child pinned under truck after crash into Encinitas gelato shop
ENCINITAS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A man is facing DUI charges after a serious crash Wednesday evening in Encinitas sent a child to the hospital and caused significant damage to a local gelato shop, authorities said.
The collision happened shortly before 6 p.m. near the intersection of South Coast Highway 101 and West D Street, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies say 64-year-old Edward De La Torre was driving a 2026 Chevy Silverado northbound on South Coast Highway 101 when he rear-ended a 2022 Toyota Prius. The impact caused the Silverado to veer off the road and slam into Gelato 101, a dessert shop located at 480 S. Coast Highway 101.
Inside the building, a male juvenile was struck by the truck and became trapped beneath it. First responders were able to free the child, who was conscious and breathing at the scene. He was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital for further evaluation. Their current condition is unknown.
De La Torre was also taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the Prius were evaluated by paramedics but did not appear to be hurt, authorities reported.
As for De La Torre, he was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The investigation remains ongoing.
