Charlie, the Komodo dragon, ready for debut at STL Zoo

ST. LOUIS - They are considered the largest lizard on Earth, and now you can find one living in Forest Park.

Charlie dragon has come to town to live, and visitors can find him usually sunning in his solarium.

Charlie is a six-year-old male and is the first Komodo dragon resident at the zoo's new habitat for the species.

“Komodo dragons are an endangered species,” Elden said. “They only occur in Indonesia, where they live on small islands. Only place in the world where Komodo dragons live. They are the largest apex predators. They eat anything they can get their mouths on from small prey to prey as large as water buffalo and deer even.”

Charlie dragon gets his name from Zoo Director Emeritus Charles Hoessle. Dragons like him can grow to 10 ft in length and 300 pounds. This lucky lizard comes to the Gateway City via Bronx Zoo in New York.

He’s walking here in this new solarium where visitors can see him beginning October 16-19 at Boo at the Zoo and at regular zoo hours.
