Challenges linger for resident after May tornado
ST. LOUIS - A tornado victim who lives in the Fountain Park neighborhood of north St. Louis still does not have power almost four months after the storm.
Melvin Arnold is living in a home filled with black mold. He has lived in the home for more than 40 years.
He's had offers to stay in a hotel but he refuses to leave his belongings. Melvin says his home is where he wants to stay.
Melvin, like many of the four thousand homes damaged from the tornado, suffered mostly roof damage. But like many others, his tarp on his damaged roof has not kept the rainwater from seeping in.
The water caused his ceilings to leak and grow mold. Melvin is getting help from the nonprofit Grassroots Redeeming Love.
They gave him a generator but last weekend someone stole it off his porch. He now had a homeless person who had put up a tent and was living in his front yard.
Melvin doesn't own the home—he rents it.
He says he didn't give permission for someone to live in his front yard. FOX 2 was unable to contact the landlord.
Ameren has not responded to our requests for information. The city of St. Louis is aware of Melvin's situation and is looking into ways to help him.
In the meantime, Grassroots Redeeming Love found another generator for him.
Volunteers worry how Melvin will be able to survive the cold winter months ahead. If you would like to support the Grassroots Redeeming Love organization that organized after the tornado hit, you can donate to their GoFundMe here.
