Calverton Park man charged in mid-July homicide
ST. LOUIS – A Calverton Park man was arrested last week in connection with a fatal shooting in the Walnut Park West neighborhood.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. on July 17 in the 5400 block of Park Lane.
Officers found the victim, Jawon Cooper, suffering from gunshot wounds. Cooper was transported to a nearby hospital after the shooting but was later pronounced dead. He was 27.
Investigators determined De’Andre Chaney, 25, and others drove to Park Lane. Chaney and another person exited their vehicle and shot Cooper.
Police said Chaney and the others were recorded on surveillance video just before the shooting.
On July 30, police went to a home in the 900 block of Olive Street where they believed Chaney was staying. Officers found two firearms and suspected narcotics. Though neither firearm was used in the shooting, police said Chaney admitted to being on the surveillance video with the others involved.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Chaney with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. Chaney remains in custody without bond. He’s due in court on Friday, Aug. 8 for a hearing.
Police said Chaney was already on supervised release after serving time in federal prison for drug conspiracy charges.
