Bishop of San Diego responds to deadly shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- In the wake of a deadly shooting during Mass at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Bishop Michael Pham of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego issued a heartfelt statement expressing grief, solidarity and a renewed commitment to school safety across the region.
"This morning’s shooting at Annunciation Church and school in Minneapolis is devasting news and affects us all. We ask for your prayers for the victims and their families, for the school community shattered by this tragic event and for the first responders who selflessly attended to the dead and injured at the scene," stated Bishop Pham.
Two children, aged 8 and 10, were killed during the violence and another 17 people were injured, the Associated Press reported. The shooter, identified as a 23-year-old man, also died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to law enforcement.
As Minneapolis authorities continue their investigation, the incident has prompted concern and reflection among Catholic communities nationwide—including here in San Diego.
In his message, Bishop Pham emphasized the importance of preparedness and safety, assuring the public that steps are being taken to ensure the well-being of local students, staff and parishioners.
"Here in our diocese, the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Police Department have gone out of their way to assist us in developing safety plans for our schools," he said. "We are grateful for their help and, in light of what happened in Minneapolis, have asked pastors and principals to review their safety plans, making sure we do everything we can to protect students, staff and everyone in our school communities."
The bishop closed his statement with a prayer for peace and unity, stating, "May God’s peace and protection be with us all. Our Lady of Refuge – pray for us."
No threats have been reported in connection to San Diego schools or churches, but the diocesan leaders say vigilance is key.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the deadly Minneapolis shooting remains ongoing.
