Birch Aquarium announces lecture series focused on ocean science, eco-optimism
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- This fall, the popular "Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series" returns to Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, inviting the public to dive into the latest breakthroughs in ocean science.
For over two decades, the lecture series has highlighted cutting-edge marine research from Scripps scientists, shedding light on the vital role oceans play in global health, economies and climate resilience. The 2025 lineup, which begins in September, emphasizes "eco-optimism" — showcasing how scientific progress can help protect and sustain marine ecosystems for generations to come.
The first lecture, “Marine Prosperity Areas Represent a New Hope in Conservation,” will take place on Monday, Sept. 8 from 7 to 8 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. It features Dr. Octavio Aburto, a marine ecologist and Scripps Oceanography professor, whose research is changing how we think about ocean conservation.
According to aquarium officials, Dr. Aburto will discuss his innovative work on "Marine Prosperity Areas" — a new framework that blends ecological protection with economic development and social equity. Unlike traditional marine protected areas that may restrict activities for years before benefits are seen, this new approach aims to deliver measurable gains for both people and the environment more immediately, aquarium officials explained.
Developed in collaboration with an international team of scientists and economists, Aburto’s model balances ecosystem restoration, economic opportunity, and community involvement, offering a new direction in marine policy.
The cost to attend the lecture is free for Birch Aquarium members and $12 for the general public. Seating is limited, and early booking is recommended.
Additional lectures are slated for Monday, Oct. 6, and Monday, Nov. 10. Aquariums officials say those topics and speakers will be announced in the coming weeks,
