Berkeley man killed roommate for not leaving bedroom: Police

BERKELEY, Mo. – A Berkeley man appeared in St. Louis County Circuit Court Tuesday morning to face charges for killing his roommate.

According to the Berkeley Police Department’s probable cause statement, the crime happened on Sunday, Sept. 7, in the 4300 block of Eminence Avenue.

Police said the suspect, Caleb J. Gavel Murphy, stood in his bedroom doorway and shot his roommate.

When questioned by police, Gavel Murphy allegedly said the victim was unarmed and didn’t threaten him, but he just wouldn’t leave his room.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Murphy with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Murphy was jailed on a $2 million cash-only bond.
