Beloved San Diego Zoo polar bear 'Kalluk' dies at 24

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic animal residents. Kalluk, a male polar bear who captured the hearts of guests and staff alike, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the age of 24, zoo officials announced Friday.

According to a statement shared by the zoo, Kalluk was surrounded by his dedicated Wildlife Care team during his final moments. He had recently begun showing signs of age-related illness, prompting a thorough wellness evaluation. After considering all options, experts made the compassionate decision to say goodbye.

Kalluk far exceeded the typical life expectancy of male polar bears in the wild, who generally live between 15 and 18 years, according to wildlife experts. He had been under the zoo’s care since arriving as an orphaned cub in 2001, along with his sister Tatqiq and another companion cub Chinook.

“Without mothers to guide them, the three cubs found a second chance at life here at the San Diego Zoo, where they have thrived ever since,” zoo officials said in a message on social media.

Kalluk was widely recognized not only for his calm and inquisitive demeanor but also for his role in conservation efforts. As a longtime ambassador for his species, zoo officials say he helped educate the public and contributed to groundbreaking research into polar bear behavior and impacts of changing environments.

“Over his 24 years, Kalluk acted as a bridge between worlds,” zoo officials noted. “These studies have provided global conservationists with crucial insights into how polar bears navigate a rapidly changing world, helping ensure a future for his counterparts."

Following his passing, Tatqiq and Chinook were given the opportunity to say their goodbyes. Zoo officials emphasized that the bond between the bears — and the grief now shared by those who knew them — serves as a reminder that the feeling of loss transcends species.

The San Diego Zoo is inviting the public to join them in honoring Kalluk’s life and legacy.
