Belleville District 201 introduces new leadership, upgrades facilities

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. - Students in Belleville are preparing to return to school with significant changes in District 201, including new leadership and upgraded facilities.

This school year, Belleville District 201 welcomes a new superintendent, Marshaun Warren, and a new principal at Belleville East High School, Joe Rujawitz. The district has invested in a $3.6 million project to expand its facilities, funded through general obligation bonds, which includes a new 15,000-square-foot cave annex.

District leaders emphasize that these improvements aim to provide students with more opportunities and a better learning environment from the first day of school.

The cave annex expansion supports new automation, manufacturing, and robotics programs, enhancing existing aviation and healthcare training. Students will have access to state-of-the-art training equipment, including a retired corporate jet for training and a digital cadaver tool.

Additionally, the district's e-sports program will move into the annex, occupying one of four dedicated program spaces. Other summer upgrades include new air conditioning in a wing at Belleville West that previously lacked it.

Belleville East High School has also replaced its stadium's artificial turf at a cost of $984,000. The new turf will be used for various activities, including football, soccer, marching band, and physical education classes.

Classes for freshmen begin on Aug. 13, with all other high school students starting on Aug. 14, marking the beginning of a school year filled with new opportunities and facilities for Belleville students.
