Beachfront La Jolla hotel completes first phase of $60M transformation
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- One of San Diego's storied beachfront hotels has completed the first phase of a major transformation, coinciding with its 90th anniversary.
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, located at 2000 Spindrift Dr., has invited families, beachgoers and tennis professionals for more than nine decades.
Formerly known as the La Jolla Beach & Yacht Club when it opened in 1927, it was turned into an exclusive tennis resort by F.W. Kellogg.
Now, 90 years later, the storied beach club has completed enhancements that are meant to "reflect a thoughtful balance of modern coastal living and enduring family traditions."
The $60 million transformation includes a redesigned pool deck, a revamped dining room and a new indoor/outdoor market.
The revitalized pool deck comes with upgraded seating options such as private cabanas and family lounges, as well as the "centerpiece" in the form of an added wood-fired pizza kitchen.
The club dining room, which offers views of the Pacific Ocean and La Jolla Shores Beach, has been redesigned to feature floor-to-ceiling oceanfront views and a lighter colored palette that mimics the beauty of California's coastline.
Plus, guests visiting after the first phase of the transformation will be treated to a new indoor/outdoor market with an array of grab-and-go meals as well as premium cuts of meat for beach barbecues or to enjoy in their own in-room kitchens.
The expansive resort currently encompasses three properties in addition to the beach club, including the 128-room La Jolla Shores Hotel and The Marine Room restaurant.
The hotel is currently offering a 90th anniversary guest experience to celebrate its iconic traditions, including rides in the Kellogg family's 1915 convertible named "Old Black Goose" and watching for the "Green Flash" at beach barbecues during sunset. More information about the limited-time package can be found on the club's website.
