Arrest warrant issued in Mark Twain double shooting

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis Circuit Court judge signed an arrest warrant Sunday for a man accused of killing one man and injuring another in a shooting last Friday evening.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened around 11:40 p.m. in the 5300 block of North Euclid Avenue in the city’s Mark Twain neighborhood.

Officers found the two victims sitting inside a Nissan. Police learned the men had been shot while in the vehicle.

The man in the driver’s seat was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 42. The victim in the passenger seat, a 34-year-old, was rushed to the hospital and listed in critical condition.

Investigators spoke with multiple witnesses, who identified Johnny L. Dukes, 38, as the shooter.

Police said Dukes was drunk and belligerent that evening in front of witnesses. One of the witnesses got a ride elsewhere to get away from Dukes.

Dukes allegedly drove to the residence where the witness went to and then shot the two victims parked outside.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Dukes with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and four counts of armed criminal action. The arrest warrant does not allow a bond.

Dukes has prior felony convictions in a 2012 case for unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession and served time in state prison. At the time of Friday’s shooting, Dukes had been placed on probation in February 2025 for misdemeanor assault.
