Arrest made in weekend north city homicide

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis Circuit Court judge signed an arrest warrant Sunday for a suspect in a fatal shooting in the city’s Walnut Park East neighborhood.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 5700 block of Henner Avenue.

Police said the victim and Marvin Byrd Jr., 54, went to a friend’s house to watch college football. Byrd and the victim live together.

The victim purchased some supplies for the gathering, which angered Byrd, according to police, because the victim was not contributing financially to household or recreational drug expenses.

Byrd took out a pistol and shot the victim in the street, police said. When officers arrived and attempted to take Byrd into custody, police allege he resisted being placed in handcuffs.

Byrd allegedly said the victim was being verbally “reckless” and that the victim charged at him. Police said Byrd later claimed the shooting was an accident.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Byrd with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, armed criminal action, and resisting arrest. The arrest warrant does not allow a bond.
