AirTag device used to track stolen motorcycle in St. Charles; two charged

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - Two people were charged after a person used an AirTag device to track down their stolen motorcycle in St. Charles.

According to a probable cause statement from the St. Charles Police Department, the theft happened Friday evening at the River Crossing Apartment Complex in St. Charles.

Police said Joseph Hemm, Laura Kofron, and an unknown individual entered the apartment complex in an unregistered white Dodge Ram pickup truck and targeted a 2015 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R motorcycle, which was parked in front of a building.

The trio loaded the motorcycle into the bed of the truck and left the complex, police said. Surveillance captured the moments the pickup truck entered the apartment complex and left with the victim's motorcycle in the back.

According to police, the victim had previously place an AirTag device beneath the motorcycle's fuel tank, which allowed investigators to track its location to the 4500 block of Tarlton Drive in unincorporated south St. Louis County.

Police obtained surveillance video, which showed Kofron and the unknown suspect pushing a different motorcycle, which was missing its ignition, from the back of the house.

According to police, Hemm's mother, the homeowner of the location on Tarlton Avenue, told officers that she was upset and asked Kofron and the unknown suspect to leave after she found them downstairs working on two different motorcycles inside the home.

When shown a photo of the stolen motorcycle, police said Hemm's mother confirmed that the vehicle was in the basement of her home. Hemm's mother allowed the investigators inside the home, where they were able to recover the motorcycle.

A short time later, Hemm arrived at the location in the Dodge Ram pickup truck that was seen on surveillance during the theft. Police said Hemm refused to make any statements to investigators regarding the incident.

According to police, Hemm's mother told officers that her son was the only person who resided in the basement of the home.

Police say Kofron admitted to stealing the motorcycle Friday night with Hemm and the unknown suspect during an interview with investigators.

The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney Office charged Joseph Hemm and Laura Kofron each with one count each of stealing a motor vehicle. The unknown third suspect in the case has not yet been charged as of this writing.

Kofron and Hemm were taken into custody on Oct. 6, according to court documents. They're both being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond. Online records do not indicate when they'll appear in court.
