Affton school bus driver pleads with drivers to know the law
AFFTON, Mo. - During a practice run for her bus route, Affton bus driver Kathy Schnurr said four drivers failed to stop for her deployed stop arm.
“They just ride past it as if that stop sign's not there,” she said.
Schnurr hopes drivers will brush up on the laws regarding school buses, as classes in many area districts will resume Monday.
“We just need to reestablish those safe routines,” said Superintendent Travis Bracht for the Affton School District.
The district placed signs about bus safety along roadways near district schools.
In Missouri, illegally passing a school bus can result in a 90-day driver’s license suspension. Repeating offenses can lead to a 120-day suspension. Drivers can face a felony if their vehicle strikes a child.
Affton resident Luke Ferguson routinely told FOX 2 he sees reckless driving on Mackenzie Road.
“I’m not seeing people stopping really well for buses, especially as the school year is starting now,” he said.
Schnurr, an Affton graduate, said she would no longer be able to drive a bus if she ever witnessed a reckless driver harming any of the students she transports.
“If I can do anything to make sure that I save even one life or keep one child out of the hospital, or prevent a tragic end to some child's day and their parents’ day, then it's worth it,” said Schnurr. “My primary job is the safety of our children."
