Abandoned school in The Hill coming down; Townhomes planned

ST. LOUIS - Demolition is underway at a long-abandoned school in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis, clearing the way for a plan to build new townhomes at the site.

On Tuesday, crews began tearing down buildings that once made up the Hubert Wheeler State School. The school was located in the 5700 block of Wilson Avenue, near Interstate 44 and Hampton Avenue.

At the moment, McBride Homes, a Chesterfield-based home building company, is leading a redevelopment plan to build 80 new townhomes on site.

Last month, McBride Homes submitted a zoning proposal to make way for the development. With that and demolition of the former school underway, the company is hopeful the townhomes could be be ready for sale by late 2026.

Last year, FOX 2 reported that the site was classified as an active hazardous substance cleanup location by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, though state regulators also noted the site could be cleaned up to a level that makes it safe for future residential use.
