A decade without answers: Family marks 10 years since Whitney Brown's murder
ST. LOUIS - Whitney Brown's mother, Erica Jones, says the past decade has felt like living in a nightmare.
Investigators say on Aug. 13, 2015 in north St. Louis, 24-year-old Whitney Brown was outside her car with her friend, 28-year-old Devon Fletcher.
Police say a gold or tan Chevy Silverado pickup truck drove up near Mimika and Shulte. The people inside the truck opened fire on a group standing outside.
Whitney was struck in the chest and Fletcher was shot in the stomach.
Neither survived.
Brown's 5-year-old son was also there, but in the back seat when shots were fired.
Jones says her grandson has carried the trauma for 10 years.
Now a high school sophomore, Jones' grandson's 8th-grade graduation photo is a reminder of the milestones Whitney never got to see.
"It's difficult every day, but he wants his mother just like I want my daughter and her siblings want their sister. It's hard because we have not had any answers," Jones said.
Despite witness accounts and surveillance images, no arrests have been made. Investigators also believe Brown and Fletcher were not the intended targets.
"We are not giving up; we have not received anything, and I'm still out here begging and pleading with the community," Jones said.
This week, family will gather to honor Whitney's memory. A balloon release will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the site of the shooting.
They're asking everyone to wear green, Whitney's favorite color.
"She was fun, outgoing, very compassionate; when it came to family and friends, it wasn't nothing that she would not do for her friends and family," Jones said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS (8477). CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
"It's never too late to say anything; it's never too late to step forward if you saw something, we just want you to say something," Jones said.
