ST. LOUIS - A plan to build 80 new townhomes in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis is gaining momentum.

McBride Homes, a Chesterfield-based home building company, has acquired a four-acre site at 5707 Wilson Avenue, near Interstate 44 and Hampton Avenue.

A McBride Homes spokesperson tells FOX 2 that it will formally submit a zoning proposal this week in line with city and state zoning requirements. The zoning process could take anywhere 75-90 days to be approved.

If the zoning requirements and other qualifications are met, McBride Homes says it could potentially break ground on the townhomes by March 1.

The site currently includes buildings that once housed the Hubert Wheeler State School. A McBride Homes spokesperson tells the structures could be demolished in the near future to make way for the development, though no specific timeline has been set just yet.

Last year, FOX 2 reported that the site was classified as an active hazardous substance cleanup location by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, though state regulators say the site could be cleaned up to a level that makes it safe for future residential use.
