71-year-old stranded overnight at hospital after ride is canceled

ST. LOUIS - Bernita Cole was left stranded at Saint Louis University Hospital for over 24 hours due to a transportation issue with Missouri's Medicaid system.

Cole, who relies on a 600-pound motorized wheelchair, was dropped off at the hospital for a 10 a.m. appointment on Tuesday morning.

"It just made me feel like they didn’t care about me! You know I’ve never felt that way before! And I’ve never had nobody treat me like that," Cole said.

Cornell Hill expressed frustration that his mother, Bernita, was left at the hospital without transportation.

“For some reason they could not provide my momma a ride at all! She had to stay more than 24 hours at a hospital. My mom is diabetic. She can’t walk. I can’t go pick her up because she uses a remote wheelchair that weighs about 600 lbs. It was just crazy  it was stressful on us," Hill said.

He felt helpless as he tried to resolve the situation. When Hill contacted MTM, he was informed that the local company, Peak Meds, marked the ride as canceled or a no-show.

"I’m going to try to reach out to this company to see what went on or what happened and why they never showed because on our end all it says was cancelled by them or no show by the transportation company," a representative from MTM told FOX 2 on the phone.

However, when FOX 2 reached out to Peak Meds, they pushed the blame back to MTM.

"Everything goes through MTM! They cancelled the trip and they called me to cancel the trip," Peak Meds LLC said on the phone.

Caught in the middle was Cole, who was forced to spend the night at the hospital, experiencing health issues such as elevated blood pressure and swollen ankles as she tried to sleep in her scooter.

"I just don’t understand what kind of company is this that would leave a patient at a hospital and not provide the transportation with getting them back home," Hill said.
