ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A stretch of Interstate 170 moves at a slow crawl at rush hour Monday following a fatal wrong-way crash earlier in the day.

According to Cpl. Dallas Thompson, Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly before 1:05 p.m.. on the Inner Belt Expressway, just south of the I-70 junction.

Investigators said the crash was caused by one vehicle traveling the wrong way on the interstate. Four vehicles were involved in the crash, Thompson said.

“[Wrong-way crashes] happen and, again, I don’t know where he came on at,” Sgt. Andrew Gadberry, Missouri State Highway Patrol, said. “It was early in the afternoon, so I don’t know where he got on where he did or why he was driving the wrong way, but yeah, it does happen.”

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
